Essential tips

Walk further, more comfortably

The advice our guides give at every trailhead — useful whether you're joining us or heading out alone.

Layer for the weather you'll get

Base layer, midlayer and a waterproof shell beat one heavy coat. Hills make their own weather.

Break boots in before the trip

Two or three local walks in the boots you'll travel with saves a week of blisters abroad.

Carry more water than feels necessary

Two litres per person for a full day, plus a way to refill at huts, fountains or streams.

Know your day's numbers

Distance, ascent and daylight together decide the pace. Plan roughly 4 km/h plus 10 minutes per 100 m of climb.

Bring a paper backup

A map and compass weigh almost nothing and keep working when a phone battery does not.

Tell someone your route

Share the plan and expected finish time — especially on self-guided trips.
