Ivinghoe Beacon & Ashridge Estate: Ridgeway Views & Ancient Beechwoods Hike
Chase some of the finest views in the Chilterns, walk one of England’s oldest trails and lose yourself among the ancient beechwoods of the Ashridge Estate.
This spectacular hike combines the best of the Chiltern Hills in one unforgettable day. We begin by following the historic Ridgeway along the Chiltern escarpment, climbing towards Ivinghoe Beacon, one of the highest and most rewarding viewpoints in the area.
The climb is concentrated in the first half of the walk, but the effort is well worth it. From the top of Ivinghoe Beacon, the views stretch across the surrounding countryside and, on a clear day, seem to go on forever.
From the open downs, the landscape then changes dramatically as we enter the ancient Chiltern beechwoods of the Ashridge Estate. Quiet woodland paths, open countryside and historic landmarks create a completely different atmosphere for the second half of the adventure.
We'll pass the impressive Bridgewater Monument, built in memory of the pioneering "Canal Duke", and have the opportunity to stop at the popular Monument Café for a well-earned break.
The route also takes us through Aldbury, one of the Chilterns' most picturesque villages, with its village pond, historic church, old stocks and quintessential English character.
The Ridgeway itself has been used for thousands of years and is regarded as England's oldest long-distance footpath. Walking along its ancient route today, high above the surrounding countryside, gives this hike a real sense of adventure and connection with the landscape.
Depending on the season, the scenery has something special to offer. Late October and early November can bring spectacular autumn colour to the beechwoods, while late April and early May transform the Ashridge woods into a sea of bluebells.
With the main climbing completed during the first half, the later stages are more relaxed, making this a rewarding day out combining open hilltop views, woodland trails, historic landmarks and beautiful English countryside.
